Description
An Excellent Copy of For Whom the Bell Tolls, Inscribed by Hemingway to Max Perkins' Secretary
Ernest Hemingway. For Whom the Bell Tolls. New
York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. First edition. Presentation
copy, inscribed by Hemingway to Irma Wyckoff, the secretary to
Hemingway's editor, the legendary Max Perkins, on the front free
endpaper: "To Irma Wyckoff / with appreciation and / affection /
Ernest Hemingway." Octavo. [x], 471, [1, blank] pages. Bound in
publisher's full oatmeal cloth, front cover stamped in black with a
Hemingway's signature, spine stamped in red and black, in the first
issue dust jacket (lacking photographer's credit beneath the photo
of Hemingway). Very minor rubbing to jacket, some light offsetting
to the verso of the jacket spine from the book's spine. A superb
copy, much brighter than usually seen, with an exceptional
association. Housed in quarter blue morocco clamshell case.Irma Wyckoff (later Muench) was the secretary to Max Perkins (1884-1947), the legendary literary editor at Scribner's, who worked with Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Thomas Wolfe and others. Perkins was famous for fighting on behalf of his authors' daring work against the hide-bound "old guard" at Scribner's, producing some of the most famous American novels of the twentieth century (including This Side of Paradise (1920), The Great Gatsby (1925), The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929), For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), and Look Homeward, Angel (1929)). Irma Wyckoff Muench was Perkins' tireless and devoted secretary for nearly twenty-five years, and was the executrix of his estate.
