FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper: To Norman Unger / with all my wishes / Erich Maria Remarque." First issue dust jacket priced "7s. 6d. net" and with "German Opinions" on the front flap.

Translated from the German by A. W. Wheen, the English edition preceded the American edition by three months.

Norman Unger was a New York book collector, known for his fastidious care of books. A Los Angeles Times article published in 1987 described the collector: "in New York book-dealing circles, Unger was known for his generosity, good taste and persistence." Bookseller Maurice F. Neville of Santa Barbara began his bookselling career when he acquired the approximately 9,000 volumes that comprised Unger's entire collection.

Books inscribed by Remarque are uncommon.

Condition: Small ink stain to front pastedown. Dust jacket unclipped (priced "7s. 6d. net"), minor edgewear; a few short tears; small tape reinforcement to spine panel on verso.
