3 volumes, 8vo. Publisher's plum-colored cloth tooled in blind. Housed in a green cloth folding case, spine lettered in black and gilt.

FIRST EDITION, mixed issue. Title page of volume II with inserted first issue title page. First issue of volume III with 32 pages of publisher's advertisements at the end of volume III dated "May 1861."

Of the 1,000 copies of the first edition, first issue published by Chapman and Hall, most were purchased by Mudie's Select Library and are uncommon on the market.

Condition: All three volumes with colored paste wash, additional color corrections to cloth, all three volumes likely recased, corners bumped and mended. Both hinges of volume I cracked but holding, front hinge of volume II crack but holding. Volume II first issue title page seemingly supplied. Textblock toned, scattered soiling and spotting throughout.
