Description

Silver Pin with Engraved Gift Inscription, Along with a Signed Note of Appreciation from Ayn Rand to Her Copy Editor Bertha "Bert" Krantz

[Ayn Rand]. Madeline Turner Sterling Silver Seagull Pin. Gift from Ayn Rand to Bertha Krantz, 1957.

Madeline Turner silver seagull pin, with "An Original M. Turner / Handwrought Sterling" and "T6" stamped on back, in its original Georg Jensen gift box (Turner designed jewelry for Jensen and for Tiffany). Measures 4 x 2 inches. Back of pin is engraved "To Bert from Ayn." Gift is accompanied by small card in an envelope inscribed by Rand: "To an ideal copy editor from a grateful author -- or: To Bert from Ayn." Some tarnish. Otherwise in fine condition.

Bertha ("Bert") Krantz was a respected, long-time copy editor at Random House, and she worked closely with Ayn Rand on her mammoth Atlas Shrugged. On a laid-in note written by Ms. Krantz on her own Random House stationery, she says about the inscriptions Rand had written in books for her that "[t]hey show how friendly we became over these four years." In her copy of Atlas Shrugged, for instance, Rand's inscription read: "To Bert Krantz -- the perfect copy editor -- thanking you for your tact, understanding and rationality -- affectionately -- Ayn Rand." One may assume that this lovely and tasteful pin was presented by Rand to Ms. Krantz upon publication of the book in 1957.
