Lewis Carroll. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1866. First edition, second issue (American issue), variant "a"; featuring sheets of the suppressed 1865 printing with the Appleton cancel title page and text points as called for. Octavo. [x], 192 pages. With forty-two illustrations by John Tenniel. Custom bound by Bayntun Riviere, cloth from original upper board, with a gilt illustration of Alice holding a pig, bound-in at rear; red pictorial morocco decorated in gilt, pictorial spine decorated and lettered in gilt with five raised bands, gilt roll to edges. Boards bowed. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges trimmed and gilt, binder's stamp to the rear dentelle. Internally generally clean and tight; gutter overextended at the frontispiece, minor intermittent soiling and foxing, minor text block edgewear. Very good or better."With this copy, we have a wonderful opportunity to see an example of the book in its proper original state, with the text and binding as they were when the book was first produced... there are two variant states of the book. This is because the second preliminary gathering [b2] was printed in duplicate, and the two settings differ in several respects... In Variant a, the first like of the last stanza of the prefatory poem reads "Alice! a..."; in the list of contents, RABBIT-HOLE has a hyphen, the "9" in page numbers 29 and 59 is oval, is round in 95, and the 5 in page 95 is undamaged," (Goodacre).
