John [Ross] Macdonald. The Moving Target. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. First edition, inscribed by the author on the title-page: "To Ron Hall / with all good wishes, / John Macdonald." Octavo (7.5 x 5.125 inches; 190 x 130 mm.). [2, blank], [iv], 245, [1, blank], [1, note on the type], [3, blank] pages. Publisher's yellowish pink cloth, stamped and lettered in dark green; top edge stained red, others rough-trimmed; in original restored dust jacket. Backstrip dulled; spine just slightly askew; bottom edge rubbed with wear to corners and foot of spine; small, faint tidemark to fore edge of rear board. A couple discreet spots of foxing to page edges; a couple small splashes to the top stain. Dust jacket spine panel dulled; front panel with two vertical creases near spine fold; occasional very minor soiling; two closed tears mended on verso; shallow restoration work at the edges of the spine; more extensive restoration at each corner of the jacket, with some printing replaced in manuscript ink. Very good with a nice overall appearance. The first Lew Archer novel. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Adapted into a 1966 Paul Newman vehicle titled Harper. From the KoKo Collection.
