Description

Emotive Pair of Miniatures in Grisaille Depicting the Ecce Homo and the Pietà.

[Illuminated Manuscript]. Two Full-Page Miniatures in Grisaille, attributed to The Master of Girarde Acarie, cut from Poème Sur La Passion, a manuscript by Jacques le Lieur. [Rouen, France, ca. 1530]. Two separate grisaille miniatures on vellum, cut from the lost manuscript of Jacques Le Lieur, Poem Sur La Passion, laid onto paper. Both approximately 6 x 4 inches.

The first depicts the convulsive scene of The Ecce Homo (John 19:5 / Matthew 27:21), where Pontius Pilate presents Christ, with hands bound and with his head crowned in a ring of thorns, to the impassioned crowd below who call for Christ's crucifixion. The second depicts The Pieta or the Lamentation of Christ, the somber quiet moment after Christ is removed from the cross and the Virgin Mary, St. John, and others grieve over Christ's limp and lifeless body. Both miniatures are framed with architectural and floral elements. The artist's mastery of perspective is featured in the architectural elements and in the distant views of Jerusalem. The use of grisaille, restricting the palate to tones of grey and black, heightens the reflective nature of the subject matter, and intensifies the small touches of white and gold highlighting. The French text on the verso can no longer be seen due to the fact that the miniatures are now pasted down on old paper. The edges are slightly cropped and rubbed. Fine.

Jacques le Lieur (c. 1475-1550) composed Poème sur las Passion for Francois I (King of France 1515-1547). The artistry of these miniatures is attributed to the Master of Girarde Acarie, due to stylistic similarities, and due to the fact that Jacques le Lieur utilized the artist for other illuminated manuscripts.
