[Illuminated Manuscript]. Manuscript Leaf from a Medieval Book of Hours: Seven Requests to Our Lord, beginning with the Prayer to the Trinity. In French. [France]: circa 1500. Single vellum leaf. Measures approximately 6.75 x 4.5 inches. Written in brown ink in a French gothic textualis. Vellum lightly toned and a bit cockled, faint foxing on outer margins, small strip of soiling on upper margin of verso. Near fine.

The recto contains a large arch-topped miniature depicting the Throne of Mercy in gold and colors above three lines of text. With a three-line initial in blue with white tracery against a gold ground with floral infill in green and red (stem with roses). Within a full inhabited border in gold and colors of acanthus leaves, vines, and various flowers, including roses; in the lower portion of the border is a smaller miniature depicting Saint Augustine meditating on the Trinity.


More Information:

In the outer border are two hybrid animals, a gray and brown unicorn with a human face on its rear end, and in lower corner another animal in gray and brown, both on patches of green grass. In the lower margin of the leaf are three lines of early script in faint brown ink describing the miniature (in French).

The verso contains fifteen lines of text with a similar floral border in the outer margin. One two-line initial in blue with white tracery against a gold ground with red floral infill with white tracery.

The text is the beginning of the French prayer The Seven Requests to Our Lord, which begins with The Prayer to the Trinity:
