Sixteenth-Century Spanish Choirbook for Palm Sunday to Pentecost
[Gradual. Manuscript on vellum, in Latin. Spain: sixteenth
or seventeenth century]. Manuscript on vellum. Large folio (20 x
13.5 inches; 509 x 343 mm.). 126 [of 130] leaves. Lacking fols. x,
cxxviii, cxxix, and cxxx (10, 128, 129, and 130). Written in black
ink in large rounded gothic liturgical hand. Six lines of text
written in black ink in a large rounded gothic liturgical hand
between six five-line red stave. Square and diamond-shaped musical
notation in black. Foliation in red in the upper corner of the
recto of each leaf. Catchwords in the lower gutter margin of the
verso of every eighth leaf. Large opening four-stave puzzle initial
in red and blue, with elaborate contrasting penwork infill and
borders in red and blue, on fol. 1r (Domine ne longe) for the
Introit for the Mass on Palm Sunday; three-stave red and blue
puzzle initial with contrasting red and blue penwork on fol. 42v
(Resurrexi et adhuc tecum) for the Introit for the Mass on Easter
Sunday; two-stave red and blue puzzle initials with contrasting
penwork on fol. 14v (In nomine domini) for ; fol. 49r (Introduxit
vos dominus) for Easter Monday; fol. 72r (Quasimodo geniti) for the
Second Sunday of Easter; fol. 78v (Iubilate Deo) for the Third
Sunday of Easter; fol. 97v (Viri Galilei) for The Ascension of the
Lord; and fol. 109v (Spiritus domini repleunt) for Pentecost
Sunday. Numerous one-stave alternating red and blue initials with
contrasting blue and red infill and extensions, and one-stave black
strapwork initials.In a handsome contemporary binding of dark brown calf over thick wooden boards. Covers panelled in blind with heavy metal cornerpieces with edge guards and five bosses. Manuscript waste pastedowns, also from a choirbook. Several leaves with margins or pieces of margins cut away. Some water damage causing bleeding, especially to words in red. A few old vellum flaws and tears, some repaired. An excellent example. From the library of John Carroll Collins.
