Description

Ian Fleming. The Man with the Golden Gun. London: Jonathan Cape, [1965]. First edition. Octavo (7.375 x 5 inches; 187 x 125 mm). 221, [3, blank] pages. Publisher's black cloth, first state with large gun design stamped in gilt toward the lower-center of the front board, spine lettered in gilt with publisher's device in gilt at foot; all edges trimmed; endpapers printed with green and white fiber pattern. In original dust jacket, designed by Richard Chopping. Boards lightly rubbed with a couple light, whitish blemishes to the rear board and a thin brownish curved line to the front board (above the golden gun); bottom corners bumped; crown slightly pushed. Dust jacket edges just a trifle worn at edges of folds; small closed tear to interior of front panel near joint fold; price-clipped. A near fine copy with virtually no oxidation to the front board gilt. The thirteenth James Bond book. One of 940 copies with the gilt-stamped gun design, produced before it became evident that the cost was prohibitively expensive to complete the print run. According to Gilbert, this is effectively a trial binding that was rejected in favor of less expensive alternative. Most copies shipped to Commonwealth countries. Gilbert A13a (1.1).
