Stephen King. 'Salem's Lot. Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1975.

8vo. Publisher's black cloth-backed red boards; original pictorial dust jacket.

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on the dedication page: "For Peter- Best, and remember they only come out at night! Stephen King 10/29/82." With publisher's code "Q37" printed in the gutter on final page of text. IN THE RARE FIRST ISSUE DUST JACKET priced "$8.95" and with the "Father Cody" misprint.

'Salem's Lot was nominated for the 'World Fantasy Award' in 1976 and the Locus Award for all-time best fantasy novel. Drawing inspiration from Dracula and transposing it to modern New England, King transformed the vampire myth into something both intimate and terrifyingly familiar. It has been adapted for the small and big screen on three occasions, most recently in 2024. Frequently cited as a cornerstone of modern vampire fiction and long acknowledged as a personal favorite of King himself, 'Salem's Lot' remains a defining work in his canon and a touchstone of twentieth-century horror literature.

King's second novel and his first bestseller had a relatively low print run of 20,000 copies. At the last minute, the publisher decided that the price should be reduced by one dollar, clipping the already printed dust jackets and re-pricing at $7.95. Only a handful of those dust jackets at original price were salvaged. While no exact quantity has ever been determined for first state dust jackets, this is the first to ever appear at auction. Without question, this exceedingly rare dust jacket is the magnum opus of Stephen King collecting.

Condition: Light touch of wear to spine ends. Dust jacket unclipped (priced "$8.95"); slight edgewear to spine ends; tiny stain to rear panel; 5mm closed tear to front flap. An extremely bright copy.

References: Currey, p. 277.

Provenance: "Peter" (presentation inscription). From the collection of David Aronovitz.
