Description
Stephen King. Pet Sematary. Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1983.8vo. Publisher's black cloth, spine and front board stamped in gilt. Original illustrated dust jacket.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE DUST JACKET. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO RICHARD MANUAL [i.e. the "real" Richard Bachman] on the title-page: "For Dick Manuel -- / With best wishes from / the ghost of Dick Bachman -- / Stephen King / 8/20/86."
Richard Bachman is King's pen name (as well as a fictional character), adopted in 1977 for his novel Rage. King hid the link between himself and Bachman, not revealing himself as the author until 1985. He collected the first four Bachman novels into The Bachman Books. Rage became controversial for being about a school shooting and was allowed to go out of print after the 1997 Heath High School shooting. Three more novels were published under the Bachman name.
Richard Manuel was a builder friend and insurance agent of Kirby McCauley, who was King's literary agent. It is a photo of Manuel that is used for that of Richard Bachman in the author photo on the Bachman books. AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY.
The first state of the dust jacket with Caretakers listed as 1982 on the rear panel.
Condition: Touch of fading to board edges; head of spine lightly bumped. Dust jacket unclipped ($15.95), slight wear to ends of spine panel with a few tiny nicks; very slight wear at edges with a few tiny splits and hint of soiling on rear panel; else, fine.
Provenance: Purchased from James & Mary Laurie, Booksellers, Saint Paul, Minn. From the William A. Strutz Library.
