Description

H. G. Wells. The Invisible Man. London: C. Arthur Pearson Ltd., 1897. First edition. Inscribed and signed with an original ink drawing of the Invisible Man by Wells, to novelist Ralph Straus. Octavo. viii, 245, [1, imprint], [2, publisher's advertisements] pages. With an original ink drawing of the Invisible Man wearing a top hat and holding a drink facing the title page, inscribed: "H. G. Wells/To Ralph Straus/1910." Publisher's pictorial red cloth, stamped in black and lettered in gilt. Cocked, corners bumped, spine sunned, minor edgewear, front joint just starting, head and foot of spine pushed and worn, somewhat rubbed and soiled. Endpapers toned, front free endpaper detached but present, front hinge weak but holding, rear hinge starting, two bookplates on the front paste down (one pasted over the other), small printed label to the rear pastedown. Text block toned and brittle with a few gutters overextended, text block edges with minor chipping and soiling. Good.

An enviable first edition of this title, complete with Well's dapper illustration of the Invisible Man and inscription to Ralph Straus. Straus, a British novelist and biographer, briefly corresponded with Wells in 1910 while writing an article about the author.
