Description

First Edition with Signed Letter from Frank Herbert

Frank Herbert. Dune. Philadelphia / New York: Chilton Books, 1965. First edition, first printing. Typed letter signed from Herbert laid in, while working at the Seattle Post Intelligencer. Large octavo. 412 pages including multiple appendices. Publisher's light blue cloth with white lettering to spine. In original pictorial dust jacket. Lightly rubbed cloth and titles with softly bumped corners. Toning to extremities. Owner's name and address to front free endpaper and name only to upper margin of page 100. Front hinge a bit soft. A very good copy. In the original first issue color pictorial dust jacket by John Schoenherr, with the price $5.95 at the upper right corner of the front flap and the publisher's imprint in four lines at the bottom of the rear flap. Jacket is heavily restored with areas of filling and color-matching. Offsetting to edges and smoothed wrinkles throughout. Small stains visible along bottom edge of rear panel. Staining and tape-shadows to verso. Overall, this is a very good copy of this science fiction classic. Herbert spent six years researching and writing this first-ever ecological sci-fi thriller. Rejected by numerous publishers, Dune was finally accepted by Chilton, a minor publishing house known primarily for auto repair manuals. Although the book was not an instant bestseller, it won the 1965 Nebula Award for Best Novel and shared the 1966 Hugo Award. Dune has sold twelve million copies and counting, more than any other science fiction novel in history.
