[Unknown]. Group of Two Early Fore-Edge Paintings: The Book of Common Prayer and The Letter of Lady Rachel Russell. London: Various publishers, 1674-1793. Fore-edge paintings depicting "The Church of St. Nicholas" and Eton College and Chapel, artists unknown. The Book of Common Prayer. And administration of the sacraments, and other rise and ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of the Church of England... London: Printed by John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1674. Early fore-edge painting depicting "The Church of St. Nicholas before the tower fell," artist unknown. Small 12mo. Unpaginated. Full dark brown morocco with decorated in gilt with silver corner-pieces, central silver oval medallion with the initials "R. H." to upper and lower board, and remnants of decorated silver clasps, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands and decorative gilt roll to edges. Silver catches on lower board present, silver clasp to upper board only partially remaining, moderate edgewear, joints starting, spine cracked and worn with losses, somewhat rubbed and discolored, boards slightly warped. Marbled endpapers; somewhat soiled and rubbed, remnants of removed sticker to front pastedown. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; text ruled in red and still bright, ink inscription to third front blank verso, light pencil notations, some offsetting, text block lightly toned, minor soiling, minor text block edgewear. The ink inscription details the purchase of this title from Christie's, Dec. 20th, 1886, noting that the fore-edge painting was already present at that time. Very good with charming, though somewhat dulled, early fore-edge painting.[Together with]: The Letters of Lady Rachel Russell. From the manuscript in the library at Woodburn Abbey... London: C. Dilly, 1793. Fifth edition. Early fore-edge painting depicting Eton College and Chapel from the Thames, artist unknown. Large octavo. 589 pages. Illustrated with portraits by C. Knight. Full Etruscan style calf decorated in gilt and blind, spine decorated in gilt with gilt-stamped red leather spine label and five raised bands, single solid gilt rule to edges. Rebacked and corners refreshed with speckled calf, moderate edgewear, rubbed and worn with some losses and soiling. Inner dentelles gilt, later marbled endpapers. Foxed, some offsetting, minor soiling, minor text block edgewear. Very good with finely-detailed, though dulled, early fore-edge painting. From the Estate of Randall J.
