Description
[Thomas Gosden, binder]. [Thomas Pike Lathy]; Piscator, pseudonym. The Angler, a Poem in Ten Cantos. With proper instructions in the art... London: W. Wright & M. Iley, 1819. Limited edition, one of 20 copies on large and thick paper. Fore-edge painting depicting a monochrome vignette of two fishermen in a boat, artist unknown. Large octavo. 234 pages. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece portrait of Thomas Gosden on India paper, mounted, and woodcut vignettes, many with penciled captions. Contemporary calf over thick wooden boards, partly beveled, elaborately blind-stamped including central shield ornament featuring IWCC (Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton's joint monogram) and fishing motifs, spine decorated in gilt with Gosden's signature fishing tools. Rebacked with original spine laid down, moderate edgewear with some losses, spine worn, somewhat rubbed. Turn-ins elaborately decorated in gilt, green moiré silked endpapers; booklabel of Estelle Doheny to front pastedown, hinges reinforced, minor soiled and wear to silk at rear. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges gilt; somewhat foxed but chiefly to front and back of text block, offsetting to title page, text block unevenly toned, minor wear to gilt on edges. Very good with charming, but rather worn, fore-edge painting.Doheny III, 622; Westwood and Satchell, page 131.
