Yellowstone National Park. Photogravures from Nature, Photographed and Published by F. Jay Haynes. (Photo-Gravure Co.: New York, 1887), first edition, Title page, Contents Page, plus 25 sepia-toned plates with protective tissue, beige decorative cloth binding with gilt and red lettering and a mounted sepia plate on front board, floral endpapers, oblong folio (14.25" x 11"). Haynes was the official photographer for both the Northern Pacific Railroad and Yellowstone National Park, given the latter honor by the Department of the Interior in 1884 following his stint as official photographer for President Arthur's excursion party through the park the year before. Photogravures from Nature gathers the best of Haynes' early photographs of the landmarks within Yellowstone, and is a wonderful collection of images from the period just following the opening of Yellowstone as the world's first national park in 1872. It is possible, though unlikely, that Haynes perused this very copy of his Yellowstone photographs as he steamed toward his next destination as an employee of the Northern Pacific.
