Though General Wilkinson was in all the right places at the right times, his military career was marked by several notable scandals and controversies. Historian Robert Leckie characterized him as "a general who never won a battle or lost a court-martial." Eberstadt 134, 107: "The first volume contains an account of the military events in which Wilkinson was engaged from 1775-1778, the part taken by him while commanding the army in Louisiana from 1797, and a history of the war on the frontier in 1812-1815. The second and third volumes contain his defenses before courts martial, 1811-1815." Howes W-429: "The atlas must have been sold separately as it seldom accompanies the text volumes." There is much on early Westward and Southern expansion, Indian affairs, and first-hand material on the Burr-Wilkinson Conspiracy to take Texas from Spain.
