A Well-Loved First Printing of the Touchstone Harry Potter Book
J. K. Rowling. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. [London]: Bloomsbury, [1997].One of the 500 first edition, first printing copies of the first and rarest of the Harry Potter books, and likely one of approximately 300 copies sent to British libraries, with glue remnants on the front free endpaper and evidence of stamp removal on the dedication page. Correct full number line ("10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1"), "Copyright © Text Joanne Rowling 1997", and "Taylor1997" on the copyright page, and with "1 wand" appearing twice (first and last) in the list of "Other Equipment" on page 53. Octavo. 223, [1, blank] pages.
Publisher's pictorial laminated boards illustrated by Thomas Taylor. Heavy wear to the binding, which is noticeably rubbed, abraded and soiled, with cracking of the laminate along the edges and corners. Corners bumped and heavily rubbed. Spine reinforced with several strips of clear tape. Spine ends chipped. Appears to have also been re-laminated at some point. Text a bit toned but clean for such an obviously well-thumbed book. The bottom half of the dedication page appears to have been cleaned, possibly to remove a library stamp. Despite the wear to the binding, a good copy of the cornerstone Harry Potter book that Stephen King called "a feat of which only a superior imagination is capable."
