Isaac Asimov. Two Foundation Volumes, including: Foundation. New York: Gnome Press, [1951]. First edition. Octavo. 255 pages. Publisher's blue cloth with red lettering on the spine and cover. First-state dust jacket. Four of the five short stories published in this edition saw print originally in Astounding Science Fiction magazine between 1942 and 1944. It was the publication of this very book, however, that served as the catalyst to the enormous popularity the Foundation series would enjoy. Foundation introduced readers to Asimov's fictional science of psychohistory, the study of predicting the actions of exceptionally large groups of people, i.e. empires. Noticeable damp-staining to the boards, especially the rear board, toning to the endpapers, and some wear to the board edges. Dust jacket moderately shelf-worn and toned, with rubbed corners, and minor paper loss to the spine extremities and flap fold ends. Reverse of dust jacket shows two small tape repairs to the spine head. All in all, a good copy of Asimov's masterpiece. [and:] Foundation and Empire. New York: Gnome Press, [1952]. First edition (Currey binding C). Octavo. 247 pages. Publisher's green cloth with black titles. Second-state dust jacket. Moderate wear to the board edges and corners. Textblock somewhat toned, especially at the endpapers. Dust jacket is mildly worn, with minimal paper loss at the corners and spine ends. Two small chips at the spine tail, else a very good copy.
