Description
One of the Most Celebrated Works of Modern Science Fiction
Frank Herbert. Dune. Philadelphia: Chilton Books, [1965].First edition. Octavo. 412 pages.
Publisher's blue cloth with white stamping. Cloth is lightly rubbed on the edges and there is minor soiling on the page edges. One signature, consisting of pages 103-133, has been mis-cut. As a result, pages have been bound off-center and a portion of the text block on the affected pages has been shaved off. The dust jacket shows some light rubbing and edge wear with a half-inch tear on the upper edge of the front panel. Despite the publisher's flaw, this is a far nicer copy of this rare title than is typically found. Overall, a very good copy.
Initially turned down by a host of publishers, Dune's popularity and relevance has continued to grow since its small initial printing by Chilton. Dune was one of the first major science fiction novels to address issues of ecology. The environmental themes in Dune are perhaps even more important today, as our world is rapidly reaching a critical point in its ability to support life. What started out for Herbert as a study of sand dunes in Oregon slowly grew into a science fiction novel believed by many to be the best ever written. "A science fiction world to compare with the fantasy world of Tolkien's Middle Earth." Estimate takes into account the minor publisher's defect.
Currey, p. 238. Anatomy of Wonder, 4-307.
