First edition. 12mo. 200pp. 16 page publisher's catalog. Illustrations in text, including a portrait of Sam Houston used as the frontispiece.

Original brown decoratively embossed boards with later brown leather backstrip. Titles stamped in gilt on the spine. Endpapers with printed publisher's catalog. Significant wear and scuffing to spine, scuffing and soiling to boards, bumped corners, and worn at the edges. Contents toned with light soiling scattered throughout. A few instances of marginalia. Front hinge cracked. Good condition.

This is held to be the first textbook devoted entirely to Texas history. D. W. C. Baker was the founder of the Austin Public Library and also played a significant role in the founding of the Austin public school system. He arrived in Texas in the 1840s and gathered and preserved many historical records of the fledgling republic and later state.
