Description

August Derleth. Someone in the Dark. Sauk City: Arkham House, 1941.

First edition, conforming to Currey priority A (no headband, bulk sheets 1.6 cm across, height of page 17.2 cm). Twelvemo. 335 pages.

Publisher's black cloth with titles in gilt on the spine. Light shelf wear. Former owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. Contents slightly toned as is common with this publisher. Dust jacket, with illustration by Frank Utpatel, soiled with small closed tears and chipping at the extremities. Old tape repairs on the back of the jacket. Very good.

Much has been written regarding the counterfeit reprint of Someone in the Dark. In 1965, Arkham's British distributor discovered a photo-offset reproduction and contacted Derleth to see if he wanted them destroyed. To his surprise Derleth requested that the sheets be sent back to Arkham. Derleth had the sheets bound complete with reproduction jackets and included them in the 1967 Arkham catalog. The present copy, however, conforms to all the points associated with the original issue. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.
