[Knights Templar]. Processus Contra Templarios. Exemplaria praetiosa III. "Ex Civitate Vaticana": Archivio Segreto Vaticano, 2007. First edition. Two folio volumes. Limited to 799 numbered sets, this being number 398. Text volume in Latin, Italian, and English, printed on specially made cotton paper, with three engraved plates, accompanying portfolio containing facsimile manuscripts and Papal seals in elaborate leather pockets decorated in gilt, publisher's vellum over wooden boards, text volume lettered in gilt, spine of portfolio with onlaid leather strapwork and ties, preserved in single wallet-style limp goatskin portfolio, with ties, original velour bag and original packaging material. Fine.This lavishly-designed production originated from the Vatican Secret Archives and possesses all of the pomp and extravagance one might expect from the Stato della Città del Vaticano. The work documents the papal hearings which eventually led to the suppression of the Templar order. From the prospectus: "The ancient parchments, and among them the Chinon paper which includes the papal acquittal upon the accusations against the Knights Templar, the private agenda with notes likely written by [P]ope Clemens V. The surviving acts of the pontiff inquiry, kept at the Vatican Secret Archive, show to what extent the pope himself aimed to save and preserve the existence of the Templar Order, assigning it a new role upon restoration of its habits and rules."
More Information: Ex Civitate Vaticana, printed in May 2007. This limited facsimile edition of seven hundred and ninety nine exemplars numbered 1/799 to 799/799 and ten exemplars numbered I/X to X/X worldwide was printed by "Art Color Printing," Rome, Italy on handmade 100% cotton paper embellished with watermarks specially made for this edition by Cartiera Amatruda, Amalfi, Italy, using traditional methods. This complete Oeuvre was stitched and bound by hand following time-honored methods using wooden plates covered with parchment and gold engravings.
