Description

An advance copy with hand drawn wraps

[Cole Younger] and [Jim Younger]. Cora McNeill. Mizzoura. Minneapolis: Mizzoura Publishing Company, 1898. This is the author's personal, pre-production copy. 8vo, 362 pages. Plain wraps with a hand drawn cover that was used in post-production as the actual cover of the book. Contains numerous pencil notations throughout. On a page titled "What the Book Is Not," the author states: "Although the book has received the sanction of the Youngers - 'Mizzoura' being the only book ever published with their knowledge and consent - yet it cannot be said to be a story from them, but of them, at least containing many incidents in their career." This copy lacks the appendix. Front cover, first page, and title page is detached. Heavy dampstaining and wear to wraps. Light to moderately toned pages.

Cora McNeill was born in St. Clair, Missouri, in 1862. She was an admirer of Cole and Jim Younger, and it is believed that she was a sweetheart of Jim's before he went to prison. She continued her correspondence to both Jim and Cole while they were incarcerated in Minnesota following the botched Northfield bank robbery. She was married to Minneapolis judge George M. Bennett who attempted to secure a pardon for the Younger brothers.

"The author uses fictitious names and writes in a fictional style, though the work is said to be factual and the author provides affidavits in an appendix as proof of its accuracy." (Adams)
