Description
Published Anonymously and Suppressed by Linnaeus Himself
[Carl Linnaeus]. Orbis Eruditi Judicium de Caroli Linnaei M. D. Scriptis. [N. p., Upsal, Sweden: n.d., 1741].First edition. Small octavo. 16 pages.
Full green pebbled cloth decoratively ruled and tooled in black with gilt spine titles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a green cloth slipcase. Minor wear to boards, with the spine ends particularly rubbed and with some minor chipping at spine head. Text with light even toning, occasional spotting, and one small stain to the bottom margin of leaf 3. A small volume of great importance in very good condition.
A "laudatory pamphlet by Linnaeus," published anonymously. The title translates to The Judgment of the Learned World Concerning the Writings of Carl Linnaeus (William T. Stearn. Botanical Latin, p. 437).
"This is the only peculiar apology which Linnaeus ever wrote in his own behalf, and also the only production which he published in an anonymous manner. However numerous and common the greatest part of his other works are, yet as extremely scarce is this performance even in Sweden. It seems neither to have been known to Haller nor to other naturalists, at least they never mentioned it, and there are scarce two copies to be met with in all Germany." (Dietrich Heinrich Stoever. "'Orbis erudite Judicium de Caroli Linnaei'...appears to be a defence of this illustrious man exorted from him by some of his envious and prejudiced contemporaries. But what redounds as much to the honour as it must have done to the peace of the cautious and amiable Linnaeus, is, that after having composed this paper, which consists entirely of the testimony which was borne to his character by the principal naturalists of his time, - such as Boerhaave, Burmann, Sloane, Dillenius, Jussieu, Haller, Gesner, Gleditsch, Breynius, &c. &c. - he afterwards entirely suppressed it; and thereby deprived his opponents of those fresh subjects of disputation, which are sure to arise on such occasions, and which only furnish ground for sincere pity for the contending parties" (John Nichols.
