A Charming and Rare Chinese Fore-Edge Painting

[Fore-Edge Painting]. Wen Yuan Ying Hua. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1920's].

Octavo (approximately 11 x 7 inches). With a fore-edge painting entitled: "The presentation in the temple" in Ming Style. It depicts a high priest (in the Chinese style) holding the infant Jesus and facing Mary and Joseph (all in Chinese style). Behind the priest is a high altar with a two-part stone tablet with the Roman Numerals of the Ten Commandments. The handsome vertical painting is done in soft shades of reds, blues, and other colors. With a neat, lengthy inscription in English on the first page.

Bound in the Chinese-style flexible wrapper of dark blue with gold. Enclosed in a brocade "puzzle" case with inner cover in three pieces which interlock, with purple ivory clasps (one of which is missing). Text a bit toned, one of the strings on binding has sprung, else fine.
