Description
A Very Rare Chinese Fore-Edge Painting
[Fore-Edge Painting]. Chu Tzu Sh'l Chang. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1920's].Octavo (approximately 9.5 x 6.5 inches). [200] pages. With a fore-edge painting of The Good Shepherd, done in the Chinese style by a Chinese artist working in connection with the Benedictine fathers in Kaifing, Hanon Province. It depicts Christ as a Chinese man, accompanied by a flock of sheep, his hand raised in benediction and his head encircled by a halo after the Buddhist fashion. Written in ink on first blank: "(the marvelous drifts of all the classes of philosophers). Selected and criticized by Ch'en Jen His (Ming CH'ing), Ming. Edited in the time of the Ch'ung Chen (1628-1634 A. D.) Contents."
The text is printed on rectos only, and is bound in a flexible wrapper of dark blue with gold. Enclosed in a brocade "puzzle" case with inner cover in three pieces which interlock, with red ivory clasps (one of which is missing). Text a bit toned, else fine.
