Michael Ondaatje. The English Patient. [London]: Bloomsbury, 1992. First edition. Signed by the author to the title page. Octavo. 307, [3] pages. Publisher's denim blue cloth, spine stamped in gilt; original illustrated dust jacket designed by AB3 Design, with photographs and art by Julian Lee and Isolde Ohlbaum. Foot of spine just pushed. Navy endpapers. Internally clean and tight, all edges trimmed, blue silk ribbon marker; very minor text block edgewear. Dust jacket unclipped (£14.99); very minor edgewear. Fine.A beautiful first edition of this novel, preceding both the Canadian and American editions. The book was well received, winning the Booker Prize in 1992 among several other awards, and was adapted to the silver screen in 1996. The film was directed by Anthony Mighella, based on his own screenplay, and starred Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche among a host of recognizable names. The film garnered and incredible twelve Academy award nominations, of which it won an even more incredible nine, including Best Picture.
