Description

The First James Bond Novel in Dust Jacket

Ian Fleming. Casino Royale. London: Jonathan Cape, [1953]. First edition of the first James Bond novel. Octavo. 218, [2, blank] pages. Publisher's black paper binding, front board stamped in red, spine stamped and lettered in red, first issue dust jacket (with price of "10s. 6d. net." and no blurb from the Sunday Times). Jacket spine just barely sunned, some very minor edgewear, some toning and light foxing or soiling to rear jacket panel, some minor marginal foxing to jacket flaps, minor rubbing to binding, light foxing to endleaves. Slightly skewed. Still, a fine copy of a very rare title in dust jacket and much better than usually seen. Chemised in cloth slipcase. From a private collection in North Carolina.

More Information:

Legend has it that Fleming began working on this book to combat the nerves he had about his impending marriage to his longtime mistress. When trying to devise an appropriate name for the main character of this book, he looked to his bookshelf and saw Field Guide to Birds of the West Indies by James Bond (Academy of Natural Sciences, 1936). He liked the author's name and "borrowed" it; the rest (as they say) is history. Biondi/Pickard, p. 40.
