First edition, inscribed by Frederic Dannay, one-half of the pair that wrote as Ellery Queen, on the front free endpaper: "To / Roy Wilkinson / This was a 'halfway' book / All best, / 'Ellery Queen' / Frederic Dannay." Octavo. x, 309, [1, blank] pages. Publisher's light gray cloth, spine and front board lettered in red, in original dust jacket. Rear board with a minor ridge across the upper portion; binding evenly and very lightly soiled. Very faint foxing to page edges; endpapers very lightly discolored; rear paste down with red crayon mark; four-digit numerical notation to front pastedown with light offsetting opposite. Dust jacket spine panel dulled; edges lightly worn with two short closed tears along bottom edge and a couple very shallow chips at fold edges. A nice, very good or better, copy.
