Christopher Marlowe. The Troublesome Raigne and Lamentable death of Edward the second, King of England: With The Tragicall fall of proud Mortimer. And also the life and death of Peirs Gavestone, the great Earle of Cornewall, and mighty favorite of King Edward the second. As it was publikely Acted by the late Queenes Maiesties Servants at the Red Bull in S. Johns streete. Written by Christopher Marlow Gent. London: Printed [at Eliot's Court Press] for Henry Bell, and are to be sold at his Shop, at the Lame-Hospitall Gate, neere Smithfield, 1622. Fourth edition. Small quarto (6.625 x 4.875 inches; 169 x 122 mm). [76] pages. Signatures: A4 (-A1) B-I4 K4 (-K4). Lacking A1 and final blank K4. Decorative woodcut on title-page; type ornament head-piece; decorative woodcut tail-piece at end.Quarter red roan over dark blue green diamond grain cloth boards. Spine label possibly lettered in manuscript: "Marlowe-Edward the Second 1622." Binding rubbed and worn; closely cropped, with loss of "THE" at head of title, and almost all headlines throughout. Some browning and soiling; mostly marginal foxing. A very good copy of this very fragile book.
Early ink inscription on front free endpaper: "Roxburghe £1.6;" ink ownership inscription on front pastedown: "F. C. Baxter / Cambridge / 1928."
Printer identified by STC. A variant (STC 17440) has "As it was publikely acted by the right Honourable the Earle of Pembrooke his servants" on the title-page.
"Marlowe's last play, Edward II, is very unlike the rest... In Edward II, there is little declamation and much brilliant stage action. The dialogue is nearly three times as rapid as in Tamberlaine, the whole emphasis is on the business of the theatre... it seems sounder to stand with Lamb in admiring the extraordinary dramaturgy of (for example) the death scene than with those who find poetry lacking in the many sinewy and frugal speeches" (Albert C. Baugh, editor, A Literary History of England).
