Description
Captain J. B. Grayson Holographic Document Signed. Four integral pages written on pages one and two with address, notations, and New Orleans postmark on page four, on stationary engraved "Correspondencia Particular del Ministro de Estado y del despacho de Guerra y Marina", 8.25" x 10.5", Palaciao nacional de Mexico, September 27, 1847. Slight paper loss on the last leaf, else, near very fine. In the letter, addressed to General George Gibson, Commissary General of Subsistence, Washington City, D.C., Grayson writes, with justifiable pride, "General, I had this pleasure on the 1st instant enclosing you my Monthly Summary Statement for August, since which time we have changed places with the Mexican Army & authorities, as the head of this sheet will indicate." The letterhead has an elaborate engraved triumph of arms below the Mexican eagle. Just two weeks prior to Captain Grayson writing this letter the United States Army under General Winfield Scott marched into Mexico City. Grayson reports that he withdrew $160,000 in Commissary of Subsistence funds for the use of the United States Army in Mexico and will require an additional $200,000 in the coming month. He cites the higher cost of rations in Mexico City than in Puebla on their march to the capital. Very attractive letter with nice military content. From the Taking of Texas Collection.Auction Info
