Description
Early Sixteenth-Century Book of Hours Printed on Vellum
[Book of Hours]. Les Heures a L'Usaige de Romme. Paris: Printed by Guillaume Anabat for Gilet and Germain Hardouyn, n.d. (circa 1508).Calendar / almanac covers the period 1508-1520. Use of Rome. Printed entirely on vellum. 79 [of 80] leaves (lacks B2). (206 x 128 mm). Initials rubricated throughout in red, blue, and gold. Twelve finely executed and boldly printed large woodcut illustrations in black. There are also eighteen small illustrations and an admirable series of border decorations.
Mid-eighteenth-century French binding in worn full leather. Hinges cracked, joints splitting. Upper corner of one leaf missing, not affecting text or images. Some mild browning to the preliminary and final leaves. An outstanding copy in bright and clean condition. Extremely scarce.
Though very similar to Lacombe 168 and 169 and Brunet 7:230 and 231, this edition (with some textual variations and thirty lines to the page) is apparently unrecorded, and may possibly be unique.
