Description
Dr. Seuss [Theodor Geisel]. Thomas D. Murphy Co. Advertising Folder, Salesman's Sample Brochure for Color Calendar Blotters. Red Oak: Thomas D. Murphy Co., 1934. Incredibly rare early color work from Dr. Seuss. Folder: 13 x 9.5 inches (330 x 241 mm). Black paper folder, front panel printed in silver, inside panels ruled in silver. Folder with minor edgewear, somewhat rubbed, corners slightly creased. Internally crisp and clean, prints and booklets all Fine.Housed in one side of the folder are sample calendar covers (one designed by Seuss and one from an unidentified artist); pebble-finish paper mounted to calendar self-cover, measuring 4.75 x 2.94 inches (120 x 74.7 mm). With mounted paper pocket behind each cover containing the remaining 11 color lithographs from each calendar, printed to pebble-finish paper with captions (each print measures 4.63 x 3 inches; 118 x 76.2 mm). On the opposite side of the folder are editorial copy booklets (9 x 3.75 inches; 229 x 95.3 mm) mounted to the folder with staples. These booklets explain the themes of four of the calendars in the Thomas D. Murphy Co. series, however not including the booklet for the accompanying Seuss calendar.
These salesman sample prints and accompanying editorials were used by Thomas D. Murphy Co. salesmen to impress prospective clients with the quality of their color printing and interesting offerings. Murphy printed several series of these calendars, twelve illustrations each, in collaboration with notable illustrators of the time. Geisel contributed two of these series, the one included here, "Seein' Things," available in 1935, 1936, and 1941, and the other, "It's a Great World," available only in 1937. Cohen, 2004.
