A Beautiful Copy of this Much
Sought-After 1943 Caldecott Medal Winner

Virginia Lee Burton, author and illustrator. The Little House. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1942. First edition. Square octavo. [iv], 40 pages. "Color-printed by photo offset lithography after drawings in watercolor, ink, and graphite by the author...Pictorial endpapers printed in black and red" (Grolier, 100 Children's Books). Publisher's light blue cloth with white pictorial stamping on front cover. In a pictorial dust jacket, price-clipped, with a few creases on spine and specks of blue on rear panel. A touch of rubbing on binding, faint offsetting from illustrations, occasional light thumbsoiling. A near fine copy, housed in a custom slipcase.

"The Little House grew out of the experience of Burton and her husband, who had a house moved from the side of a highway to a more rural location. In the story, the house (identified as female) is increasingly surrounded by a growing city until she is happily relocated to the country. The Little House is frequently cited as a commentary on the urban sprawl of the mid-twentieth century in the United States, but Burton, who tested this story-like all her children's books-on her sons and their friends, claimed her intent was rather to give children a sense of the passage of time and the seasons. Produced during Burton's most prolific period as an author and illustrator, The Little House won the Caldecott Medal in 1943...Described by Anne Carroll Moore, superintendent of children's services at The New York Public Library, as 'an honest-to-goodness American picture book,' it was adapted in 1952 as an animated short film by the Walt Disney Company...The book has been a perennial best seller, twice named in lists of the hundred best books for children (National Education Society, 1999 and 2007) as well as in the top one hundred best picture books of all time (School Library Journal, 2012)" (Grolier, 100 Children's Books, 86).
