Description

The Exceedingly Scarce First Edition of Scouting for Boys

Lieut.-General R. S. S. Baden Powell C. B. Scouting for Boys. A Handbook for Instruction in Good Citizenship. London: Published by Horace Cox, [1908]. First edition, first issue. Octavo. [ii], [398] pages. With the front and rear wrappers of each of the six parts bound in where called for. Original publisher's green cloth, front cover double-ruled in blind, with the Boy Scouts' symbol stamped in the center in blind, spine ruled in blind and lettered in gilt. Some rubbing, sunning, and mild wear to binding. Skewed. With the ink ownership stamp of the "5th Beds. Scout Troop" several times on the endleaves and in the text. A fine copy of this rare book on scouting.

Baden-Powell issued this work originally in six parts, each issued fortnightly beginning on January 15, 1908. It proved so popular that in May of that year a collected edition (containing a slightly altered text and illustrations by the author), was published both in hardcover (the present book) and in wrappers. In turn, these first editions were so popular that this title was reprinted five times that same year and has since become one of the world's best selling books.
