Description
A Wonderful Autograph Letter Signed by L. Frank Baum on His Illustrated "Ozcot" Stationery
L. Frank Baum. Autograph Letter Signed. "Ozcot" At
Hollywood in California, December 1918. On his personalized
stationery, with an area for writing in the center, surrounded by
images of covers of fourteen "Oz" books. One octavo page on one
quarto leaf. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. "Dear Roland
[corrected by Baum]/Am glad you still enjoy/the Oz stories - It
might have/been a very good idea [corrected by Baum] if the/Tin
woodman had had some tin/bits - I have been very ill - but/am still
writing Oz stories/Sincerely Yours-/L. Frank Baum". Sheet is
toned with two vertical and one horizontal creases, some minor
soiling and rubbing. An excellent letter. This letter, dated about six months before his death of a stroke, is written to his friend, Roland Bishop, presumably concerning his recently-published book, The Tin Woodman of Oz (Reilly & Britton, published May 13, 1918). The illness Baum describes in his letter is possibly due to angina and gall bladder problems brought on from the stress of producing this book (at least his wife Maud thought so). Baum was even sent to Angelus Hospital and underwent surgery; during his recovery, he was practically immobile, and so his normal work schedule was abandoned. The recipient of this letter was Roland Bishop (no date-1950), co-founder of Bishop & Co., a major confectionary company in California (he sold it to Nabisco in 1930). He and his family helped start the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, and they were also instrumental in the founding of the Hancock Park and Beverly Hills enclaves of Los Angeles. He was a close friend of Baum's.
