One of only 500 copies in hardcover
J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's
Stone. [London]: Bloomsbury, [1997]. 8vo. Publisher's pictorial
boards, illustrated by Thomas Taylor. Custom red clamshell,
gilt-stamped lettering piece.FIRST EDITION IN HARDCOVER. All first edition points present as called for: Wendy Cooling review printed on the front board, rear board with the misprints "Philospher's" and "Wizardry and Witchcraft" and an illustration of a young wizard, copyright page listing the author as "Joanne Rowling," copyright page without a space between "Taylor" and "1997," and "1 wand" listed twice on page 53.
Both the hardback and paperback first editions of this title "...were published on the same date and neither has bibliographical priority," in a total edition of 5,650 copies. However, the hardcover edition remains notably scarcer, as only 500 copies in this binding were produced, chiefly for distribution to public libraries.
Condition: A completely unrestored example with unusually bright pictorial boards. Spine lightly sunned, minor rubbing and edgewear, primarily to corners and spine ends, minor abrasions. Textblock toned as usual. Small abrasion to rear pastedown. No ex-library markings and better preserved than usually found.
