Newton D. Baker, Jr. (1871-1937) was a prominent lawyer and Democrat politician who served as the mayor of Cleveland from 1912 to 1915. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson appointed him as Secretary of War. In this role, Baker oversaw America's military involvement in World War I, which included creating the nationwide draft, selecting General John J. Pershing to lead the American Expeditionary Forces, and ensuring that American troops fought as an independent force rather than merely replenishing British and French troops.

Condition: Light shelf wear, and bumped corners. Small scratch at top right corner of front cover. Previous dealer's annotations in pencil on front endpaper.
