William Alexander Percy (1885-1942) was a lawyer, planter, and poet from a prominent family in Greenville, Mississippi. His autobiography, Lanterns on the Levee, became a bestseller. As an influential figure and author he promoted writers like William Faulkner and supported the Southern Agrarians, including John Crowe Ransom, Allen Tate, and Robert Penn Warren. He adopted his nephew and future novelist Walker Percy after his parents' deaths. William Percy's notable life included service in World War I, leadership during the 1927 Mississippi River flood, and mentoring writers Shelby Foote and Walker Percy.
Father James Harold Flye was an Episcopalian priest, best known for his correspondence with writer James Agee, whom he taught history at St. Andrew's School, near Sewanee, Tennessee. As an amateur photographer, he photographed his students, their parents, teachers, staff, townspeople, and notable individuals like poet William Alexander Percy whose book, Lanterns on the Levee, Flye was known to have greatly admired. A WONDERFUL ASSOCIATION COPY.
