Description
Frank Lloyd Wright. Ausgeführte Bauten und Entwürfe von Frank Lloyd Wright. Berlin: Ernst Wasmuth, 1910. First edition. Two volumes. Oblong folio. (25.6 x 16.3 inches; 650 x 415 mm. Complete with 100 plates; 72 lithographed plates (numbered I to LXIV and XIIIa, XIVa, XXXIa, XXXIb, XXXIIIa, XLIVa, XLVIIa and LVIa) and 28 tissue overlays, printed variously in brown, gray, gold, and white ink on gray or white paper or tissue. Each plate is embossed with Wright's stamp, though Sweeney notes that Wright completed the work alongside assistants and collaborators, including Marion Mahony Griffin and Wright's son, Lloyd. Loose as issued in two portfolios; grey boards lettered in black, backed in black cloth, each with four linen ties to edges. Volume II with two linen ties torn and frayed. Internally clean, plates somewhat foxed but unworn, tissue overlays somewhat toned. [Together with]: Text Booklet. 16 x 12.5 inches (406 x 317 mm). 30, [1] pages. Including foreword by Frank Lloyd Wright (dated 15th May, 1910) and an annotated list of plates. Loosely inserted in unbound sheets, as issued. Somewhat foxed.Housed together in publisher's folding portfolio; half cream linen over boards, with three protective flaps and four linen ties to close. Somewhat foxed, heavy edgewear, linen worn and frayed, bottom protective flap detached but present, linen ties somewhat frayed. Publisher's portfolio very good despite wear but housing near fine plates and booklet.
An extremely scarce first edition of Frank Lloyd Wright's pre-war German publication, highlighting over 70 projects completed between 1893 and 1909. Sadly, the edition is scarce due to a tragic incident that occurred in August 1914, in which an employee of Wright's murdered seven people and set fire to Wright's home and studio, Taliesin, while Wright was away. The fire gutted the home and destroyed the bulk of the American copies of this portfolio, in addition to much of Wright's other work. Notable illustrations include: Winslow Residence, Lexington Terrace, Metzker Residence, River Forest Golf Club, Prairie House, Hardy House, Wolf Lake Development, the Unity Temple, and the Cheney House.
Sweeney, 87.
