Description
One of the Author's Copies, with the Extremely Rare Original Photographic Print by Doris Ulmann
Doris Ulmann, photographs. Julia Peterkin, text. Roll, Jordan, Roll. New York: Robert O. Ballou, [1933].First edition. number 10 of 350 special edition copies signed by Ulmann and Peterkin on the limitation page. Folio. 341 pages plus limitation. With ninety copper-plate photogravures inserted throughout.
Publisher's quarter white linen boards over brown paper boards with gilt spine titles and beveled edges. Top edge gilt. House in the original brown paper slipcase. Minimal wear to binding. Light spotting to the spine, with some rubbing of the gilt titles. Occasional offsetting and very minor scattered foxing. A beautiful production in near fine condition.
Roll, Jordan, Roll was critically acclaimed as one of the first books to portray African-Americans as fully-dimensional people rather than as stereotypes. W. E. B. Du Bois stated, "Peterkin is a Southern white woman, but she has the eye and the ear to see beauty and know truth." This particular copy has extremely desirable provenance as it is number ten (of 350) and was originally owned by the author herself. Included with this rare edition is a one-page Autograph Note Signed by Julia Peterkin dated 1930 from her Lang Syne Plantation address in South Carolina. A 1980 letter to a previous owner from a South Carolina bookseller documents that this book was purchased from William Peterkin, Julia's grandson.
Also laid in this copy is one of the rare photographic prints signed by Doris Ulmann in pencil in the lower margin. The print was reproduced in the book facing page 14. Copies are rarely ever found with the accompanying print, and rarer still are copies with the original print which were also once owned by the author.
