[Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler]. Werner Spies. Pour Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. London: Thames and Hudson, 1965. First edition, one of 200 copies with a folder of signed prints. Near fine.
One of 200 copies (number 64) with a folder of seven original pencil-signed lithographs, each numbered 64. Quarto. 311, [iii] pages. With eight lithographs and twenty-three tipped-in facsimile letters. Publisher's full blue cloth, front board and spine stamped in gilt, folder is bound in matching blue cloth. Both are housed in the original board slipcase. Spines a bit sunned, some mild rubbing, else near fine.
The signed lithographs are by Andre Masson, Elie Lascaux, Suzanne Rogers, Andre Beaudin, Eugene de Kermadec, Yves Rouvre and Sebastien Hadengue, with each signed by their respective artist. The Picasso lithograph is not present.
This volume was produced as a Festschrift to honor Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler's (1884-1979) 80th birthday. Kahnweiler was one of the most important art dealers of the 20th century. He was among a very small group who appreciated, encouraged and supported by his purchases Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and the entire Cubist movement. The volume not only reflects the breadth of his artistic support but of his importance to the broad field of arts and letters. Facsimile letters by such notables as Andre Malraux, Gertrude Stein, Max Jacob, Tristan Tzara, Roland Penrose, Paul Klee, and others are included.
