Description
"The Most Comprehensive Account of Texas Published During Its Decade as an Independent Nation"--Jenkins
William Kennedy. Texas: The Rise, Progress,
and Prospects of the Republic of Texas. London: Hastings,
1841.FIRST EDITION. Two volumes, 8vo. lii, 378; vi, 548 pages. With two folding maps (one partially hand-colored) and two full-page maps. Original blindstamped green cloth, the covers decorated in blind with central Lone Star motif, spines gilt-lettered. Housed in a modern quarter morocco clamshell case. Laid in is a clipped signature of author.
A complete first edition set of William Kennedy's early work on the Republic of Texas containing a wealth of information which greatly encouraged English and European settlement. Volume I contains John Arrowsmith's rare map, which according to Jenkins was "included in only a portion of the copies of the original edition, as only a small percentage of surviving copies contain it." This is the second appearance of the Arrowsmith map, which originally came out in Arrowsmith's London Atlas between 1832 and 1846. The influence of this book was far reaching and Kennedy shortly thereafter served as Texan Consul in London and returned to Texas as British Consul at Galveston.
"Most comprehensive account of Texas published during its decade as an independent nation.... The work had enormous influence in Europe, especially in England and Germany.... The large map by John Arrowsmith ranks with those of Tanner and Emory as the best maps of Texas during the period of the Republic. It is a monument of Texas cartography" (Jenkins).
Condition: Spines a little faded and dulled, cloth splitting at head of upper joint on Vol. 1, front hinge of Vol. 1 cracked and starting to pull away from text block, hinges tender, some rubbing and minor wear to extremities and pale spotting, bookplates removed from front pastedowns. Text lightly browned, some occasional minor spotting. The large Arrowsmith map of Texas with one tear (approx. 4" crossing image near gutter margin), a few small separations at folds at margins, mild offsetting and very slight toning, but overall very good.
