With 120 Hand-Colored Lithographed Plates of Native Americans
Thomas L. McKenney & James Hall: History of the Indian Tribes of North America with Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs Embellished with One Hundred and Twenty Portraits from the Indian Gallery in the Department of War, at Washington. Volumes I and II: Philadelphia: D. Rice & A. N. Hart, 1854. Volume III: Philadelphia: J. T. Bowen, 1850. Mixed edition (Volumes I and II from the second octavo edition; Volume III from the first octavo edition). Quarto. iv, 333, [1, blank]; xvii, [1, blank], [9]-290; iv, [17]-392 pages. With 120 hand-colored portrait plates with tissue guards. Publisher's full blind-tooled leather with gilt titles on banded spines. All edges gilt. Bindings worn, abraded and frayed. Volume I rebacked, with the remaining portions of the original spine leather laid down. Spine head of Volume II chipped. Bindings shaken, with all hinges cracked, the front hinge in Volume III reinforced with white tape. Scattered foxing. Preliminaries to Volume III a bit more foxed than the other two volumes. Text unevenly toned. Penciled ownership signatures to front free endpapers. Red Jacket plate in Volume I partially detached. Keokuk plate in Volume II detached and heavily edge-worn. Most plates with very little or no foxing or spotting. Very good. A one-page Typed Letter Signed by Frederick Goff on Library of Congress stationery is laid in, responding to the owner of this copy about market value and availability of this particular set.From the preface: "The folio edition...has been pronounced by the learned and polished both of Europe and America, to be one of the most valuable and interesting productions of the present age...This universal appeal of the folio edition of the work, has induced the publishers of the present edition to alter the size to royal octavo, and thus place it within reach of the thousands, who, with taste and learning equal to the patrons of the large edition, have no less capacity to appreciate its worth and beauties."
