Jacinto. Mexico: Santiago Pérez, 1837.FIRST EDITION. 12mo. vii, 162 pages. Contemporary quarter Mexican straight-grained morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt lettered and decorated.
Jenkins writes: "This is an eyewitness account of the Texas Revolution written by Santa Anna's private secretary. Martine Caro had access to orders and documents available to no one else except Santa Anna... Martinez Caro also divulges the text of the secret treaty of Velasco in which Santa Anna agreed to work for Texas independence and agreed that the Texas border would be the Rio Grande... Throughout the text Martinez Caro gives an insider's view of the whole campaign, the capture at San Jacinto, the negotiations for the treaty, and life as a prisoner. He records the various attempts to escape, including the Bartolome Pages attempt to free Santa Anna."
Very rare: according to online records, only four copies have sold at auction in the last sixty years.
Condition: Boards worn and rubbed, upper joint starting at foot. Pastedowns a little discolored with slight offsetting to endpapers, upper blank fore-corner of title page creased. Text lightly toned but overall a handsome copy.
