"This Noticia Estadistica is based on a visit to Texas in the spring of 1834, to hear the complaints of the Texans and to gain time for the government to devote its attention to Texas matters... It is an invaluable account of Texas as it appeared to an intelligent observer in 1834" (Streeter). Almonte was sent as an envoy of the Mexican government to gather statistics concerning the population, commerce, geography, and climate of Texas, but also to make observations on their military capacities. His trip took him from Nacogdoches to San Felipe, Brazoria, Velasco, Matagorda, and Harrisburg (Houston). These notes from his journey cover natural history, Indian tribes, and geography, and present a somewhat sympathetic portrait of the Texan people. Additionally, the charts and tables contain population statistics and information pertinent to both the history of slavery and native American history.
"One of the most valuable descriptions of Texas on the eve of revolution, this volume was written by an agent for the Mexican government... In short, he was to placate the colonists and spy out their weaknesses and strengths" (Jenkins).
Very rare: According to online auction databases only three copies have appeared at auction since 1958.
Condition: Wrappers restored and reapplied (a few minor voids filled), minor chipping to blank corners of last few leaves and lower wrapper, a few minor stains to wraps, but generally very fine.
