Description

Sir Thomas Phillipps' Copy of an Important Work on the Texas-Louisiana Boundary

Pedro Pina, 1828.

FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Sir Thomas Phillipps' copy, with his ink number below imprint. Full modern dark green morocco, gilt-lettered on cover, by McDonald. Housed in a full morocco pull-off case.

Errata not present, which is called for by Streeter who states, "The copy at the University of Texas has a leaf of errata. The corrections there noted have been made in pen in my copy." However, the University of Texas has confirmed that their copy is a photocopy of the original and does not include an errata. The copy offered here has similar corrections made in an early hand.

In 1827, Father José Maria de Jesus Puelles was asked to review the boundary between Texas and Louisiana. Twenty years earlier, Puelles had been part of the first commission to review this very topic.

Streeter writes, "Though Puelles modestly asks at the end of his Informe that the President excuse any defects in the paper 'for,' as he says, 'it is a long time, more than 20 years, that I studied this question. I have forgotten a great deal, lost a great many papers, and what I have left area few very small notes,' this report by a highly intelligent priest who had spent years on the frontier and who had studied and was familiar with the documents, is a fundamental source on the vexatious Texas-Louisiana boundary question."

Extremely rare: According to online auction records, only three copies have appeared at auction since 1922.

Condition: Some foxing to title page, occasional minor stray fox marks throughout, some early ink marginalia. Text block has mild foxing throughout, with heavy foxing to the title page.
