1941.LIMITED EDITION, number 39 of 75 copies, numbered and signed by Roosevelt with his initials "F.D.R." WITH AN ADDITIONAL PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION to the President's Naval Aide Capt. John R. Beardall, "For Jack Beardall with a Happy Christmas from Franklin D. Roosevelt." Slim quarto. Publisher's vellum-backed marbled paper boards, printed blue paper spine label. Top edge gilt. Housed in the original slipcase.
An experienced Naval Officer, Capt. John "Jack" R. Beardall served as Aide to the Secretary of the Navy from May 1, 1936, to June 30, 1939. He then served as Commanding Office the USS Vincennes from July 1939 until April 1941 when assigned duty as Naval Aide to the President of the United States. After the United States entered WWII in December 1941, he was detached for duty as Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy and Commandant. "For exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States" in that assignment, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. He retired with the rank of Rear Admiral on May 27, 1946, after forty years' service (Naval History Division).
President Roosevelt exclusively presented these specially bound copies as gifts to his closest friends, family, and select members of the White House staff. According to our research, only seven other inscribed copies have appeared at auction in the past forty years.
Condition: Boards and endpapers dampstained and with scattered foxing, abrasion to paper spine label. Light wear to slipcase.
